Dr. Anil Bhan, an esteemed Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeon, focuses on aortic valve surgery and boasts the largest professional experience in aortic surgery across India. With more than 43 years of specialization in Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery (CTVS), he has performed over 15,000 cardiac and vascular surgeries, encompassing a wide array of procedures such as heart transplant surgery, pediatric cardiac surgery, aortic aneurysm surgery, valve repairs, and peripheral vascular surgery. His contributions extend beyond surgery as he has designed and developed over 50 instruments crucial for cardiac procedures, demonstrating his innovative approach to improving surgical outcomes. Recognized as one of the premier pediatric cardiac surgeons in Delhi/NCR, Dr. Bhan achieved a notable milestone in 2007 by performing heart bypass surgery on the youngest patient in India, who was just 18 months old. Dr. Bhan's pioneering spirit is evident through his introduction of groundbreaking techniques in India, including the first extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in 2000 and the use of a harmonic scalpel for harvesting radial mammary artery conduits in 1995. He played a pivotal role in India's medical history by being part of the team that performed the country's first heart transplant in 1994 and subsequently assisting with transplant surgeries in various hospitals nationwide. His educational qualifications include MBBS from Government Medical Coll., Srinagar, 1981, MS (General Surgery) from Post Graduate Inst. of Medical Education & Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, 1985, and MCh (Cardio Thoracic and Vascular Surgery) from All India Inst. of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, 1988. Dr. Bhan's influence extends beyond his surgical prowess; he spearheaded the establishment of three cardiac surgical programs at Puttaparthi, Whitefield, and Max Heart and Vascular Inst. in 1992, 2001, and 2004, respectively, contributing significantly to the advancement of cardiac care in India. His global reputation as a leading cardiac surgeon stems from his tireless efforts in advancing CTVS and his innovative contributions to the development of new equipment that enhances surgical techniques, making him a revered figure in the field worldwide. He is an esteemed part of the Pediatric Cardiac Society of India, the Indian Association of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgeons, the Cardiothoracic Surgical Network, USA, and the Delhi Chapter of the Cardiological Society of India.
